Shropshire Council in warning over phone tax scam

Scammers are targeting householders in Shropshire, claiming they have not paid their council tax and demanding immediate payment over the phone.

Shropshire Council has issued a warning to residents after receiving a number of reports of the scam.

Residents receive a telephone call, purportedly from the council, telling them they have not paid the latest installment of their council tax.

They are asked to call a landline number where payment can then be made and are threatened with legal action if this is not done.

A spokesman from Shropshire Council said: "We have been advised of a possible scam where customers receive a phone call to advise that they have fallen behind on their council tax payments and that the last installment for this year needs to be paid.

"They are then asked to call 020 3930 8128 so that they can make a payment to prevent court action. Shropshire Council would never ask you to phone this number if you were behind with your council tax payments."
