Homeless teenager threatened Co-op worker with big knife
A homeless teenager produced a large kitchen knife and terrified a member of staff at a Co-op store during an attempted robbery.
The victim, described as a woman of pensionable age, feared she was going to die when the 17-year-old who had covered his face jumped over the counter and trapped her.
He demanded she open the till. She explained that she couldn’t and he eventually fled empty handed.
The teenager, of no fixed abode from the Wrexham area, admitted attempted robbery at The Co-op Store in Market Street, Rhos, on December 13.
He was remanded in custody pending sentencing in January.
District Judge Mr Gwyn Jones at North East Wales Magistrates’ youth court at Mold said he was remanding the youth, who had no previous convictions, in secure accommodation partly for his own welfare following a threat to take his own life.
The defendant apologised in open court for the trauma he had caused his victim.
Prosecutor Mr Justin Espie said the attempted robbery indicated the level of desperation the defendant found himself in.
Defending solicitor Mr Euros Jones said he knew what he had done was wrong and he wished to apologise to his victim in open court.
