Fitness fanatics from Tier 4 areas outside the county illegally visited the Foundry Gym in Stafford Park, Telford, last Thursday, while Shropshire was still in Tier 3.

But things didn't quite work out - and they fled before they were issued with fines for breaking Covid-19 restrictions.

When police arrived they spoke to several other people who provided identification to confirm they were local residents.

Police have said that no fines were given and officers have been engaging with the business owner to ensure they are aware of the necessary guidance and procedures that should be put in place when the establishment is open. The gym has since been closed in line with current lockdown rules.

Inspector Antony Cleobury said: “To help stop the spread of the virus it’s essential people follow the regulations and do not travel unnecessarily.

“We do understand that people want to be able to use gyms and leisure centres and it must be frustrating for those who cannot due to the regulations – but these rules are there for a reason, to keep us all safe and to try and get back to normal as soon as possible.

"Those that knowingly breach the rules will be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

“We will continue to work with the council and local businesses such as gyms to offer support and guidance around the restrictions but where we come across a clear breach will not hesitate to take action.”
