Nicholas John Burgess, aged 51 and of no fixed abode but from Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty to driving a Vauxhall Corsa on the A442 at Peplow on September 29, with more than twice the limit of booze on his breath.

Telford Magistrates Court, sitting on Wednesday, was told that he recorded 74 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when the limit is 35.

Miss Sara Beddow, prosecuting, told the court that Burgess had drank 10 pints of Coors before attempting to drive from Cressage to his partner's home in Woore. He hit a telegraph pole just outside Hodnet on the car's nearside and failed a police roadside breath test.

She said Burgess had given his full co-operation to police.
