William Robert Jones, aged 30, of Wheatcommon Lane, pleaded guilty to stealing two bottles of wine and chocolates valued at £25, and then assaulting a woman outside a Co-op in the town on March 23.

Telford Magistrates Court heard that Jones was caught on CCTV swearing at staff in the shop and then images showed him jumping out of a car and headbutting his ex-partner.

The woman did not want to press ahead with charges but the legal action proceeded because it was caught on camera, the court was told on Wednesday.

"She fell to the ground, holding her face," said prosecutor Sara Beddow.

"She did not wish to pursue but it was caught on CCTV."

Miss Beddow told the court that Jones has previous convictions for assault matters and committed the offence while under a suspended prison sentence. The court heard that the suspended sentence was for a dissimilar matter.

Martin McNamara, defending Jones, said his client was "terrified of the suspended sentence being activated and being sent to prison".
