Telford driver wins case explaining 'special reasons' why he wasn't covered by car insurance
Magistrates decided to accept a driver's plea not to put points on his licence after he said he had special reasons why he was not covered by insurance.
Police had used their lights to stop Ian James Humphreys in Bank Way, Telford, when they thought he had been driving an Audi A4 "erratically" on October 12, 2022.
When police said their computer showed he had no insurance for the car, the 39-year-old father of three, with a fourth on the way, protested his innocence.
But a deeper check into insurance records meant he was bang to rights.
Humphreys pleaded guilty to the charge but took his protest to Telford Magistrates Court on Friday to plead his case for not having points, facing losing his licence.
Speaking in the witness box under oath, Humphreys said he had been under the belief that he was paying his employer to be covered under his business insurance. This meant he could drive customer vehicles, he said.
