Pooja Kanda, whose 16-year-old son Ronan was murdered as he walked home after visiting a friend, spoke to youngsters at Lanesfield Primary School about the devastation caused by his death.

Sitting in the room where she used to attend parents' evenings, Mrs Kanda told the Express & Star how she relived Ronan's death every time she read about a young person being murdered in a knife attack.

"It's really sad, it does take me back to the day, it's a painful experience over and over. This is why taking these measures is important to bring about a reduction in this.

"I feel really overwhelmed by the fact that was in this class, wearing the purple uniform.

"When I used to come into this room for parents' evening, I didn't know what would happen to him in six years' time. I'm putting the message across to the future."

Ronan, 16, was murdered by Prabjeet Veadhesa and Sukhman Shergill, who were also 16 at the time of his death in June 2022. Veadhesa was told he would serve a minimum of 18 years, and Shergill at least 16 years. Ronan was walking home from the house of a friend who owed Veadhesa money, and the pair mistakenly thought Ronan was the boy in question.
