Letter: Support school uniforms
In reply to W F Kerswell's letter of October 5 – Scandal of wasted cash.
I was fortunate enough to have attended Church Stretton school in the 1950s at the same time as William Kerswell. It was an excellent school, with teachers and headmaster leading by example, smart in appearance and commanding strong discipline which included that children should wear a school uniform.
My family had little money like most others after the war but they were in full approval of a school uniform, discipline and a good school meal as a foundation for a child's future.
Heaven forbid that we scrap the school uniform and we see children at school with baseball caps and T-shirts. William thought we should abolish school meal charges to eradicate the administration costs and the disposal of food because they cannot pay for seconds.
My answer to that is, if a child receives a good breakfast at home they would manage well on the reasonably priced dinner provided at school, especially if fruit and vegetables were made the priority, and abolish pop and crisps completely.
