Pupils get snap happy at Tenbury school
Nearly 200 pupils have been getting out and about with old-style film cameras for a new photographic challenge called ‘Through the eyes of a child’.
Around 180 children from Abberley Hall School in Great Witley, near Tenbury Wells, were armed with a disposable camera for the project.
Abberley Hall marketing director Victoria Beswick said they asked pupils aged from eight to 13 to capture three images which demonstrated what they loved about their school, in an activity developed and sponsored by creative agency The Big Helping, who work with the school.
She said: “We know that Abberley Hall is a very distinctive place which prides itself on letting children be children, encouraging them to flourish in their own way, so we thought the competition would allow us to see things through their eyes.
“The joy of using a low-tech camera meant the whole process was honest with no retouching or deleting of images.
"Some children were a little confused at first as they are used to using their electronic devices to take pictures but all took to the task with great vigour and the results showed a real hunger for the challenge.”
The competition had a range of topics selected by the children, including landscapes, 'my favourite thing', 'people who work in school', 'what I do at break' and taking a photo in a lesson without the teacher noticing.
Tim Worsley, director and founder of Worcester-based The Big Helping, said: “The aim was not to capture the perfect picture but it was about building confidence, having fun and exploring new ideas and we were delighted with the results.”
A final exhibition of 32 shortlisted photographs was staged at the school at the end of term for parents and friends to view and framed images were for sale for £50 each, with all proceeds going to the charitable Abberley Hall Foundation.
The winner, 10-year-old Arthur Blackmore, was presented with a GoPro action camera, with three runners up were highly commended.
