The Friends of Bishops Castle Primary School held an annual Easter fair to start the holidays, and bagged £800 to go towards future school trips and equipment.

Amanda Houghton, chairman of the friends group, said about 200 people had come through on the afternoon at the weekend.

She said: "It's something we do every year, it involves stalls, crafts, refreshments, a tombola and a raffle. We also had an Easter bonnet competition.

"It was very well supported by the families of the children, friends and carers and people from the community. We raised the money in about an hour and a half – we started at 2pm and by 4pm we were packing up."

She said the group raised thousands for the school every year with such events.

"We are a small group of parents who raise money to go towards things like school trips and equipment, sports equipment, televisions, new computer gear, trips to Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury, that kind of thing.

"We've bought minibus in the past and our last thing was playground markings that cost about £3,000.

"The money is for things that the government can't provide, privileges and little things that they wouldn't have otherwise.

"Last year we raised £7,000 and of threat we ploughed £6,500 back into the school.

"We aim to do that again this year."

Bishop's Castle Primary School is a non-denominational school of approximately 130 children between the ages of four to eleven years.

The school, at Oak Meadow on the edge of Bishop's Castle, is a part of a cooperative trust along with several other local primary schools as well as Bishops Castle Community College.
