McDonald’s crew members across the UK cover a total of 3,000 MILES each week on litter patrols

ADVERTORIAL: Did you know McDonald’s crew members have been cleaning up litter dropped in our local communities for over 35 years!

It may surprise you to hear that McDonald’s crew members across the UK cover a total of 3,000 MILES each week on litter patrols (where they collect litter from any origin, not just their own).

This equates to 150,000 miles, or the distance of FOUR marathons per restaurant per year.

McDonald's are tackling litter not just through picking it up, but also by working to reduce waste produced by its restaurants. They set themselves the target of sending zero waste to landfill by 2020 (and many restaurants actually achieved this in 2017.)

This summer we've joined forces with McDonald's to help them continue their work against litter, and we want to get our readers involved as well.

Similar clean up events will be taking place up and down the country

Throughout the year teams of McDonald’s volunteers take to the streets to tackle litter in their local communities - and they want your help choosing which area to clean up this June.

Email webdesk@expressandstar.co.uk with your suggestions for where the McDonald’s crew members should clean up in your area. For example this could be a local playground, park or popular spot for residents where there is a problem with litter.

We'll announce the area that will be cleaned up in the coming weeks and will be inviting as many of our readers as possible to take part in the clean-up itself. More details to follow.

Similar clean up events will be taking place up and down the country where volunteers will be removing rubbish from various locations.

This month-long initiative is just one of the ways McDonald's is tackling litter in 2019 as part of its 'Keep Up the Clean Up' campaign.

Check out McDonald's sustainability credentials from 2018 in numbers

  • In 2018 22,000 tonnes of cardboard were collected for recycling from McDonald’s restaurants and that’s equivalent to saving about 374,000 trees

  • In 2018 McDonald's recycled 498 tonnes of paper cups, equivalent to over 40 million cups (McDonald’s are also happy for paper cups from any brand to be placed in their recycling bins - not just their own)

  • Since 2015 McDonald’s has installed recycling units in more than 1,000 of its UK restaurants, so it’s easier to separate your paper cups and plastics for recycling, meaning 85% of restaurants now have customer recycling facilities.

  • Just 9% of its customer packaging is made from plastic

How can I volunteer to join the clean up in our area?

McDonald's crew members out on a litter pick

Once we have selected the location in our area for a clean-up, we will make readers aware on our website - and include details of how to take part.

For now, just make sure you've had your say in the form above!

*We reserve the right to amend void or cancel any or all suggested “litter pick” sites without prior notice.
