District judge Kevin Grego ordered business operators Gurdip and Simmerjit Sandhar to keep the sandwich shop in Market Square, Wellington, closed.

The couple, of Waterloo Street, Tipton, will have to keep the unit closed until it is sure the insects have been eradicated.

Inspectors visited the branch today and found 16 out of 19 traps had caught cockroaches.

The sandwich shop was closed after inspectors found an "active infestation" last Monday.

Mr David Whiting, on behalf of the couple, said: "They are working hard with the infestation company. They are working hard with the local authority."

Ms Catherine Girvan, on behalf of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "Cockroaches carry bacteria which is linked to food poisoning.

"They are difficult to get rid of. It can take three weeks to eradicate cockroaches.

"In their egg stage they are almost impervious to the insecticide."

A Subway spokesperson said: "As local business owners serving local customers, Gurdip and Simmerjit Sandhar are working hand-in-hand with the environmental health officers to eradicate the problem and will only open the store once the EHO has given the green light."
