Katie Pierce, agreed to have her hair shaved off for the cancer charity back in August of last year.

But little did she know that a few months later her family would need the support of Macmillan themselves.

In April this year Katie's mother Jill Pierce, from Cheshire, died after a six-month battle with cancer.

The 36-year-old, who works at M&S in Shrewsbury, had her shoulder-length hair shaved by a stylist from the town's Toni & Guy at the front of the store.

She also has been collecting donations and telling her story at the store daily for the past couple of weeks, and has so far raised about £2,000 for Macmillan.

"My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer last August and had chemo and radiotherapy, but unfortunately it didn't work and the cancer got more aggressive and spread and we lost her in April," Katie said.

"From the beginning Macmillan were involved, they gave my mum all the leaflets and told her she could call them whenever and they talked through what was going to happen.

"They gave us equipment when my mum became terminally ill such as a hospital bed and things like that. They were always on call, it would've been so much harder without Macmillan.

"A few people at work had their head shaved last year and I said I'd be interested and then when my mum was diagnosed I became more determined and when she died I wanted to raise as much money as possible.

"It's been quite an emotional couple of weeks standing and telling my story every day, but today I just felt proud of how far we've come and how much we've raised."
