Smoking in Shropshire is at its lowest rate since records began

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show 10 per cent of adults in Shropshire smoked in 2022 – down from 13.2 per cent the year before and the lowest rate since records began for the area in 2012.

It follows trends across England, where the national rate of smokers reached 12.7 per cent, the lowest level on record.

Councillor Cecilia Motley, cabinet member for adult social care, public health and communities said: “Seeing the smoking rates in Shropshire continue to fall is fantastic news.

"Smoking is the single largest cause of preventable death and the biggest cause of cancer worldwide.

"We know that giving up smoking is one of the best ways to improve your health.
