Hugh Porter waves off cyclists in race

Cycling legend Hugh Porter MBE waved off cyclists who took part in a 50 mile race around the region.

A total of 146 cyclists took part in Wolverhampton Racing Cycling Club's ride on Saturday.

The event, called '50 in 4 Reliability Ride', began at Pattingham Hall before going to Aldersley, Coven, Brewood, Penkridge, Bradley. Newport, Shifnal and Pattingham.

The ride has been going since the 1960s.

Cyclists paid £4 to take part before embarking on the route.

Mr Porter, who won four world titles in the individual pursuit, waved off groups of around 20 riders at a time.

Mr Porter, who is a member of the club, said: "It was a good event. It is a popular event. It attracts riders from all the local clubs in the area.

"It has been going for over 50 years. I go down to support the event and help out."
