Help needed to stop youth club near Market Drayton closing

A youth club will be forced to close within months unless it finds new volunteers and members.

Ashley and Loggerheads Junior Youth Club, based near Market Drayton, has said it will close in July, seven years after it opened, due to a lack of members.

About 35 youngsters used to attend sessions on Friday evenings at Ashley Memorial Hall, but recently numbers have gone down to about 12.

Andy Gough, chair of the committee, said: "We have been seeing a gradual fall-off in the number of children attending the youth club for some time, and recently we held a session with our lowest attendance ever.

"Many of our regulars have left as they have got older, and despite our efforts, we have had no luck attracting new younger members.

"Several of the current committee also plan to stand down in the summer as our children have also moved on to other activities or reached the upper age limit.

"So, as things stand, I'm sorry to have to announce that youth club will close for good at the end of the summer term in July.

"If anyone would like a new challenge and would like to take over the running of the youth club, or knows anyone who would, please call me on 07767 260051."

The youth club runs every other Friday night from 6.30pm until 8pm in term time.

It is aimed at eight-year-olds to 12-year-olds.

Children can take part in a variety of activities including crafts, board games, games and sports.

Mr Gough added: "There has been a youth club in the village for 50 years. We re-started it in 2010.

"We need about four people to run it and as many members as possible.

"As well as the Friday night sessions we also normally have a trip-out at the end of the school term. In the past we have done bowling trips, bubble football, had the wildlife people and their animals in, roller skating, discos etc.

"It costs £1.50 per session and is great for the children to join. They can also bring some money for a tuck shop we have.

"Parents have said it is good for their children's confidence and the feedback is always good.

"It would be such a shame to close so hopefully someone can come forward and take it on."
