Pc Alan Ambrose, the Safer Neighbourhood Officer for Market Drayton and former PCSO in Newport, said he his now on the mend and is planning to shave his head to raise funds for the NHS.

And though he may not be blessed with the most flowing of locks, Pc Ambrose will be aiming to grow a luscious mane to be shorn off at the end of lockdown for maximum impact.

More Covid-19 coverage:

Describing his experience of the illness, Pc Ambrose said: "I’m in no doubt I’m one of the lucky ones. I’ve been really ill - the worst I’ve ever felt - but I was fortunate that I didn’t need to be taken into hospital.

“I had the cough, a splitting sore head and every one of my bones felt like it had been battered and bruised form the inside.

“It’s actually really difficult to put into words just how poorly this thing makes you feel.

"Knowing how bad I’ve been, I really can’t imagine how much worse those poor people who have ended up on a hospital ward or in intensive care must be feeling.

“The doctors, nurses and staff in our hospitals, and the paramedics have all been fantastic.

"We are seeing on the news every day the hours they are working and the lengths they are going to to give every single patient the best chance they have of getting through this.

“I’m at the stage now where I can walk a short distance but even that is a struggle. I’ve still got a slight cough, shortness of breath and pain in my side when I cough is excruciating, but I’m coming out the other side. Many are not so lucky.

“When people ask me what I would say to anyone else, it’s very simple – stay at home, stay indoors, keep the pressure off our wonderful NHS, and help save more lives”
