Biker killed in A49 crash with 'seriously injured' car driver taken to hospital

Two vehicles - a Ducati motorbike and a Honda Jazz car - collided at around 1.40pm on the A49 by Prees Heath Common Nature Reserve near Prees Heath Roundabout, where the road meets the A41.

West Mercia Police said the male motorcyclist was confirmed dead at the scene of the crash while the two female occupants of the car were taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The driver, who had to be cut out by firefighters, had serious injuries while the passenger had minor injuries.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said crews were called at 1.38pm with two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford dispatched.

A spokeswoman said: "On arrival, crews discovered the motorcyclist, a man, in a critical condition.

“Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, it became apparent that he could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene.

“The driver of the car, a woman, was cut free from the vehicle with the assistance of fire colleagues before being assessed by medics. She was treated for potentially serious injuries before being airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment.

“A third patient, the female passenger of the car, was treated by ambulance staff for injuries not believed to be serious before being conveyed by land ambulance to the same hospital for further treatment.”

West Mercia Police said the road would be "closed for some time" due to the crash.

Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said crews were called at 2.08pm. Three fire appliances, including the rescue tender, from Prees, Wellington and Whitchurch have been sent after receiving a request from West Midlands Ambulance Service to assist at the scene. The Midlands Air Ambulance has also attended.

Firefighters used cutters and spreaders once at the scene.

Drivers have been asked to find alternative routes.
