Homes plan next to Oswestry primary school refused

Plans for three houses to be built next to a busy school and community centre have been refused by planning officers.

Residents who live nearby the site said the area was already "mayhem" and today said news of the refusal was a "welcome relief".

The proposals were for three homes in Cabin Lane, Oswestry, on a plot of land near to the Meadows Primary School and Kidszone Day Nursery at Eastern Oswestry Community Centre.

Yesterday Shropshire Council confirmed they had thrown out the plans.

Ian Kilby, development manager for Shropshire Council, said: "The proposed development would represent an unacceptable form of development that would appear cramped and contrived in appearance and context.

"The development site is located within close proximity to development of incompatible uses that would present an unacceptable standard of living for its future occupants, who would be subject to diminished levels of residential amenities.

"The proposed development is unable to supply acceptable arrangements for the removal of surface water failing to meet the basic requirements of Core Strategy CS18 and SAMDev MD2. Furthermore, the development site is directly atop a culverted watercourse, resultantly no development should occur to ensure that this remains easily accessible and maintainable should the need arise, no measures of mitigation or easement have been provided."

Resident Claire Arnold, who campaigned against the plans, said the refusal was "great news".

She said: "All of us residents at the time said the plans were ridiculous and would cause total carnage in the area because of how busy it already is, so it's a relief to see that our views don't differ too much from the planning officers.

"The refusal is great news but we have to prepare for the fact that the applicant could lodge an appeal, and even lower the number of houses down to two, I suppose we have to wait and see but for now it's a welcome relief."

Applicant Dennis Edwards submitted the plans for the terrace of three houses, as well as two parking spaces per property on vacant land between The Parade, which features the One Stop convenience shop, a takeaway and a hairdressers, and Cabin Lane Church.
