'Avoid the area': Serious crash closes major county road, two air ambulances sent

A serious crash near Oswestry involving two vehicles has closed a major road between Shropshire and Mid Wales.

Police said the incident took place on the A483, with the road closed in both directions between Mile End at Oswestry and the A495 at Llynclys. Emergency services including air ambulance crews have attended.

Officers said that the Maesbury Road junction is also closed.

An update from police, issued at around 9.20am said officers expect the road to be 'closed for a number of hours', with emergency services currently at the scene.

A spokesman for Shropshire Police said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a serious collision on the A483.

"The road is closed between Mile End and Welshpool and is expected to be closed for a number of hours.

"The Maesbury Road Junction is also closed. Please seek alternative routes."

The West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed multiple crews had been sent to the scene – including two air ambulances.

A spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a two vehicle RTC on the A483 in Oswestry at 8.50am.

"We sent two ambulances, two paramedic officers and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford to the scene.

"The Welsh Air Ambulance was also in attendance.”

Motorists diverted southbound are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol:

  • At the A5/A483 Mile End roundabout, take the A5 exit headed southbound

  • Continue on the A5 towards the junction with the A458

  • Take the A458 westbound to re-join the A483

Northbound traffic is advised to follow the above route in reverse.
