Councillor Mike Isherwood, the current mayor of Oswestry, and Shropshire Councillor for Oswestry West said he will leave Shropshire Council on January 17.
The councillor recently qualified as a full-time teacher, but he has said as council meetings are held during the day when he is at work, it was "impossible" to do both.
He said: “Many residents will know that in the summer I graduated as a teacher and started a new career as a secondary teacher.
"I had hoped to be able to continue to serve on both Shropshire Council and Oswestry Town Council until the elections in May.
"Unfortunately, unlike Oswestry Town, the meetings of Shropshire Council are all held in the day-time making it impossible for many working people like myself to attend.
"I hope this will change in the future. The good news is that Councillor Olly Rose, the former Mayor of Oswestry who joined the council with me in 2017, will be standing to represent the residents of my ward at the elections on May 1 and I am delighted to be able to endorse her.
"I would like to add that it has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to stand up for Oswestry in Shirehall and I thank all those who have supported me over the last three and a half years.”
Councillor Isherwood will remain a member of Oswestry Town Council and complete his term as mayor before standing again for the town council on the 1st of May.
