More than 1,400 girls from Girlguides from across Shropshire took part in a fairground-theme celebration event to mark the movement’s 100th birthday.

The day gave Rainbows and Brownies the chance to experience a range of activities including circus skills, African drumming, storytelling, samba and bhangra dancing.

For the Guides and senior section, there were inflatables, a graffiti wall and selfie hashtag printer along with a chill-out zone, silent disco and an outside film into the evening. The Guides also slept over, with some getting the chance to stay in the big top.

Jackfield Tile Museum was also on hand to help the girls make a tile mosaic, which they will then display to commemorate the event.

The highlight of the day saw 1,400 members join together in a carnival parade – which also helped to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research. Clare Shinton, county commissioner for Girlguiding Shropshire, said: “We have a fantastic group of volunteers in Shropshire, giving our girls and young women opportunity and adventure every week.

“This was an occasion to come together as a county and to celebrate our success over the last 100 years and to look forward to giving more girls the opportunities that being involved with Girlguiding gives them.

“It was a great event and everyone had a brilliant time.”
