Dedication recognised by industry award
A retired scientist has been awarded a medal for continuous membership of an industry body.
Graham Furber, from Shrewsbury, was awarded a medal for 50 years service to the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) at their bi-annual congress event in Birmingham.
The congress is the biggest dedicated conference in the UK for students, practitioners and industry professionals in the field of biomedical science.
Mr Furber joined the IBMS in 1967 as a student member and in 1975 became an IBMS Fellow, the highest level of membership in the organisation. He specialised in haematology and blood transfusion at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital until his retirement in 2009.
Biomedical scientist diagnose disease and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments through the analysis of fluids and tissue samples, handling over 150 million samples every year. In the UK alone, pathologists are involved in over 70 per cent of diagnoses in the NHS.
IBMS President Ian Sturdgess said: “Graham has demonstrated a passion for the field, skill and dedication to the Institute and to the profession. It is my pleasure to recognise his achievements today.”
