Michael Roberts lives on Buttington Road in Monkmoor and regularly sees cars, vans and the occasional HGV using his road as a cut through and breaking the speed limit.

He says it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.

He has now taken his concerns to the local councillor and police, but the situation is continuing and now Michael has taken matters in to his own hands and put up a number of 30mph signs which he has affixed to lamp posts.

He said: "I just hope that these signs will stop the vehicles coming through as they do.

"I am worried that there will be a serious accident soon. The drivers come through here and I have even seen HGV lorries coming along the road just to shave a few minutes off their travel time from the nearby business park to the main road.

"I collected the signs and have put them up on the posts. Something had to be done to bring the speed limit to the attention of drivers. I would prefer it to be around 20mph here as there are a lot of children but realised that this could not be possible."

Lib Dem councillor David Vasmer, who represents the Underdale ward on Shropshire Council said he approved of Mr Roberts' actions and said that something had to be done to curb the speeding traffic.

He said he would raise the issue with Shropshire Council's Highways department.

Councillor Vasmer added: "There is a real problem down there with cars cutting through. There is a lot of activity.

"Traffic is building up on Monkmoor Road and so people are trying to find alternative routes. They are cutting through from the business park and it is causing a very dangerous situation.

"I think that it is great what Mr Roberts has done. The community are really trying to do something about it. I am going to be in touch with the highways departments at Shirehall to talk about what can be done.

"What worries me is that there are a lot of children who play along there. They congregate on the grassed area at Middletown Square. It is very dangerous when cars come around the corner from the school site. Something needs to be done and it needs to be done now."
