A5 crash causes huge delays as bank holiday rush begins
Drivers faced huge delays on the A5 and M54 today after two crashes happened as the bank holiday rush began.
Both sides of the A5 were blocked for a short period but westbound drivers faced the most disruption, with tailbacks stretching from Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton while the smash was cleared.
Initially one westbound lane was closed when a motorhome and car collided on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, however the road was then closed completely and drivers were left with delays of more than 90 minutes as a result
The crash happened at around 2.30pm, between the Preston Boats Roundabout and the Emstrey Roundabout, but the road was not back fully open until around 6pm.
An eastbound crash also briefly blocked the road for drivers heading towards Telford at around 4.45pm.
Ambulance crews were called to the westbound crash but were stood down by police.
Bank holiday traffic was expected to reach its peak on Friday as holidaymakers competed with commuters for space on the roads - particularly on the A5 which is a key route for Midland holidaymakers heading to the Welsh coast.
Around 2.86 million leisure trips were expected to be made by car on Friday, according to the RAC, with 4pm until 7pm likely to be the busiest period.
