Foursome saddle up in memory of friend

It is a challenge which would intimidate even the most hardened of cyclists but four fundraisers will set out on Sunday (6) to ride 230 miles in 24 hours on small-wheeled folding bikes.

The Half Bike Heroes will ride three laps of the Isle of Wight to raise money for the Brian Tumour Charity.

James Godfrey, from Telford, and Paul Williams, Richard Dawson and his son Ben, from Surrey be pedalling away in memory of a close friend who died in 2012.

And now, Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport and Shrewsbury have signed up as corporate sponsors for the challenge.

James said: “Having lost our close friend Chris Hoyle in 2012 to brain cancer, we wanted to do something in his memory, but we knew we needed to stand out from the many other worthy fund-raising activities that take place.

“So we set up Half Bike Heroes with the plan to ride silly distances on small-wheeled folding bikes, or Bromptons as they’re known.”

They’ve already ridden 170 miles on the Way of the Roses coast2coast bike ride, and completed six laps of the Isle of Man TT circuit – the first cyclists to ride around the TT course for 24 hours.

Martin Pitchford, from Henshalls, said the team had been extremely impressed with the Half Bike Heroes and their commitment to the cause, so they had decided to back their latest challenge.

“We are very happy to be involved with the project as we are always keen to support local causes and local people who are going that extra mile for charity.

“The Half Bike Heroes set themselves such incredible challenges that we were delighted to be asked to get involved, and we’ll be tracking their progress throughout the day.”
