Decision on house plans in Shrewsbury deferred

An application has been submitted to Shropshire Council for seven houses on land off Washford Road.

But a number of objections and a petition against the development were sent to the council.

Shrewsbury Civic Society objected to the plans. Members agreed to the principle of housing over access issues and because there are no charging points for cars.

Meole Village Residents Association objected to the plans, as did Shropshire Wildlife Trust, 36 individuals and a petition with 19 signatures from residents of Washford Road was received.

Objections were raised over the siting, scale and design, impact to the character and setting of Meole Brace and the conservation area, visual impact and landscaping, highways and access, ecology and residential amenity.

Shrewsbury Town Council is in support of the application and welcomed the chance to discuss the plans with the architect at a recent planning committee meeting.

One comment in support was sent to the council's planning department by a member of the public.

A neutral comment was sent to the council by Meole Brace Garden and Allotment Club.

The club's committee sought reassurance that the boundary fence/hedge between the two sites which is currently "pretty dilapidated" will be properly and fittingly reinstated.

The council's case officer Tim Rogers recommended that the central planning committee approved the application at its meeting May 10.

But the committee decided to defer the decision to a future meeting for further highways consideration.

The application follows permission granted in outline for six houses back in 2016.

This application seeks full planning permission for seven three-bedroom houses set out in a line.

One would be detached and the rest would be semi-detached, while five would have two storeys and two would have three.

Each house would have two parking spaces and there would be a further seven spaced distributed across the site.

The existing road on the corner of Station Road would be retained, while an additional access route would be formed on formed on Washford Road.

The site was formerly a builders’ yard and is now used in connection with a marquee business.

The site also contains modern workshops and lock-up garages. All buildings except the existing garages between the two access points are to be demolished.
