Councillor Peter Nutting was officially sworn in as Mayor at the annual meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council on Tuesday night.

The mayor-making ceremony, which was held in The Walker Theatre, saw Councillor Nutting take over the role as civic leader from outgoing Mayor, Councillor Jane Mackenzie.

Councillor Phil Gillam was also appointed as Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Nutting said his main aim as Mayor is to raise the profile of the area for both residents and visitors alike as well as strengthen the already strong links between Shrewsbury Town Council and Shropshire Council, of which he is Leader.

He added that he wants to work towards ensuring that the Town Council has a permanent headquarters in the town centre, which can also be shared with the community.

He said: “I am looking forward to the challenges that the role will provide as well as upholding the position of Mayor representing a town that means so much to me and my family.”

He also took the opportunity to thank former Mayor, Jane Mackenzie and her Consort, Tony Parsons, for the work they had done for the town over the last 12 months.

“Jane and Tony have done a tremendous job of representing Shrewsbury during her term of office. It is now my responsibility to carry on the tradition of highlighting the fabulous town we have here both within our community and beyond.”

Councillor Nutting added that he would also use his mayoral year to continue to promote the town and its businesses.

He will now be officially sworn in at a civic service held at St Chad’s Church on June 10.
