Shrewsbury Half Marathon: Roads closed as runners hit streets

Various roads were closed throughout the morning as a result, with the route taking runners 13.1 miles through the town centre, up Ellesmere Road and back down Berwick Road.

Organisers promised that this year's event would be the biggest and best yet, and a combined 3,000 runners were expected to take part in today's half marathon and yesterday's finale of the Shropshire Primary Schools Challenge.

Among the runners taking part today were contingents from 110 running clubs including Shropshire Shufflers, Lawley Running Club, Wrekin Road Runners, Telford Harriers, Oswestry Olympians, Shrewsbury AC, Whitchurch Whippets, Bridgnorth Running Club and Telford AC.

More than 60 runners from Shrewsbury School were also taking part.

The route started and finished at West Mid Showground, where the race village was based, and followed the River Severn to and through the Quarry Park before taking runners around the town centre.

The race then went over the English Bridge, up and back down Longden Coleham, back to the town centre and up Wyle Cop before heading out of town up Ellesmere Road, across to Berwick and back down to the finish at the showground.

The race started at 9am and was expected to finish at around midday.
