New Shrewsbury care home to create almost 60 jobs
Almost 60 jobs will be created when a new 87-bed care home is built in Shrewsbury.
Outline plans for the new three-storey home on land off Shillingston Drive, Battlefield, were given the green light by Shropshire Council this week.
The site, which covers about 0.8 hectares, is part brownfield and part greenfield as there is an existing detached building.
Under the plans, the existing building would be demolished and a three-storey care home would be built, with associated day space, kitchen, laundry and administrative accommodation. A car park with 55 spaces would be provided.
The development would generate the equivalent of 58 full time jobs for local people.
The site leads onto Shillingston Drive, a residential road which serves existing housing to the south east of the site.
The same type of development was approved in 2012, but as the home was not built, the planning consent has now lapsed. Frontier Estates bought the site earlier this year and has submitted the current application which is an updated version of the original scheme.
Shropshire Council's case office Jane Raymond said: "The proposed development is acceptable in principle providing a care home to meet the growing needs for elderly care provision, in an appropriate and sustainable location.
"A safe means of access and sufficient parking space can be provided and the revised indicative layout will provide an ecological buffer that will protect and enhance the ecological network and it is considered that the proposal represents an acceptable compromise between minimising tree removal and creating the necessary space for a workable scheme.
"The scale, design and appearance of the building and the layout and landscaping of the site will be determined at the reserved matters stage but it is considered that a three storey building of a satisfactory scale and design can be accommodated on this site without adverse impact on the character and appearance of the locality and residential amenity."
The finer details will have to be submitted to the council and approved before building can begin.
