Chaddeslode House

Shropshire Council has approved plans to transform Chaddeslode House in Abbey Foregate, into six apartments, convert a Grade II listed former cottage, renovate the stables and build two semi-detached houses in the gardens of the former mental health facility.

The house was built in the mid 1800s and the NHS vacated the building in 2015.

Chaddeslode House will be subdivided along its natural existing structural breaks within the building.

A design statement submitted to Shropshire Council’s planning department said: “The design seeks to subdivide Chaddeslode House along its natural existing structural breaks within the building. This will provide a selection of individual homes in sympathy with the current buildings.

"The 1960s west wing will be subdivided into two apartments. The conversion will retain the main staircase to the house, within a single property, introduce new door openings as necessary and remove some of the windows to the west wing.

“The remodelling of The Stables removes the 1960s style windows and provides a new fenestration and façade to this single aspect property.

“The single storey side wings to The Stables will have roof lights to the kitchen dining and hall staircase areas which take advantage of the raised ceiling, which follow the rafter line of the roof.

Extension

“The cottage has been compromised by its office use and has poor quality internal spaces to the rear with the main two storey front element providing better amenity spaces. The application therefore seeks to remove the single storey rear extension and build a new two storey extension leaving the majority of the main cottage unchanged.

“Ample space exists for additional residential properties without compromising the setting of Chaddeslode House.

"The proposed location for the two properties is to the left and behind the front line of Chaddeslode House. The two new properties take their design cues from Chaddeslode House.”

Shropshire Council's planning officer Jane Raymond approved the application.

She says in a report: "The proposed conversion and associated alterations would address some of the previous unsympathetic modifications and extensions to the buildings and would preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the buildings and ensure their long-term preservation.

"In addition it is considered that the proposed new build dwellings to the rear of the site would have no significant impact on the setting of the listed buildings or the locality or wider Conservation area."
