Firefighters and an animal rescue technician spent two hours in Alberbury, near Shrewsbury, yesterday afternoon using ropes and the fire service boat to free the cows.

Video taken at the riverside showed firefighters lined up on a tree-lined bank preparing to heave the cow out of the water.

Four fire appliances including the Rescue Tender and the Water Rescue Unit were sent to the scene from Shrewsbury.

An operations officer was also in attendance.

The rescue began just before 2pm and was over by 4pm.
