Shrewsbury Library, in Castle Gates, was first closed on Tuesday and has remained closed since while health and safety inspections are carried out.

Gareth Proffitt, spokesman for Shropshire Council, confirmed the library will be back open on Friday and said: “Shrewsbury Library is to remain closed today while contractors construct a covered walkway to enable people to safely access the building.

The library is a Grade I -listed building which was the home of Shrewsbury School from 1550 to 1882.

The building required restoration which was mainly done in the 1980s, costing about £3 million.

The closure has meant that Shrewsbury Town Council’s offices had to be moved to the council’s depot at Weeping Cross on Tuesday, before moving back to Riggs Hall yesterday.

Michael Lewis, library service manager, said: “Some debris has fallen from the building and, after taking advice from our emergency surveyor, we took the decision to close the library.

"Our main concern is the safety of our customers and the public.”
