Shrewsbury Library to reopen today

A library is due to reopen today after it was closed to the public earlier in the week when stonework crumbled off the front of the building.

Shrewsbury Library, in Castle Gates, was first closed on Tuesday while health and safety inspections were carried out and a covered walkway was constructed to enable members of the public to access the building safely.

The library is a Grade I-listed building which was the home of Shrewsbury School from 1550 to 1882.

The building required restoration which was mainly done in the 1980s, costing about £3 million.

The closure this week meant that Shrewsbury Town Council’s offices had to be temporarily moved to the council’s depot at Weeping Cross on Tuesday, before moving back to Riggs Hall the next day.
