The men, women and children arrived on the land at Shirehall during Wednesday night.

The council served notice on them to leave the site by tea-time last night.

Up to eight caravans were parked on the site, which has recently been converted in to additional car parking spaces for council staff. There are also a number of cars.

According to one man the area was being used as a toilet, and rubbish had been building up.

He said: “I have nothing against these people, but they should not move on to private land and leave a mess behind them. They weren’t there at 10pm on Wednesday but when I got up at 6am yesterday they had arrived. I don’t know where they came from.”

John Taylor, Shropshire Council’s senior gypsy and travellers officer, said: “Shropshire Council served notice on them to leave the site by 5pm."
