Shropshire Council will have to work with Historic England to carry out further investigations for the repair of Shrewsbury Library, in Castle Gates.

The library was first closed on Tuesday while health and safety inspections were carried out and a covered walkway was constructed to enable members of the public to access the building safely.

The building reopened yesterday morning to the public.

Now a Shropshire Council spokesman has said they do not know how long the repairs will take.

Gareth Proffitt, spokesman for Shropshire Council, said: “It’s too early at this stage to say how long repairs to Shrewsbury Library will take, and therefore how long the scaffolding will remain in place.

Appropriate

"Before we can decide on the most appropriate repairs we’ll have to carry out further investigations and – as the building is Grade I listed – we’ll have to consult – and work closely with - Historic England.

"However, it’s likely that the scaffolding will be in place for several weeks.”

The library is a Grade I Listed building which was the home of Shrewsbury School from 1550 to 1882.

The building required restoration which was mainly done in the 1980s, costing about £3 million.

The closure this week meant that Shrewsbury Town Council’s offices had to be temporarily moved to the council’s depot at Weeping Cross on Tuesday, before moving back to Riggs Hall the next day.
