OAP Apollo needs a home for life

Staff at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury are hoping National Grandparents Day on Sunday (7) will prove every dog really does have its day.

The team are searching for a home for a very special Old Age Pooch (OAP), Border Collie Cross Apollo, who they say, at the grand old age of 11, really deserves to enjoy the love and affection of a forever family in his twilight years.

Sue Bromley, rehoming centre assistant manager, said: “We have been looking after Apollo for two years so he was well into middle age when he arrived, but sadly he has been in and out of kennels since being a young dog which has been unsettling for him. He was quite a worried boy when he first arrived and we have worked closely with him to help him feel more confident.

“He has built a wonderful bond with staff and volunteers and his true personality has shone through, which has been lovely to see. Now he’s definitely a gorgeous golden oldie, although he sometimes doesn’t act like it as he can be quite giddy!”

Staff say Apollo is a typical Collie and so likes to keep his brain busy. He particularly enjoys search games, seeking out his favourite toys and treats. He loves getting out and about too for a nice walk but is also happy to sit back and relax with his two-legged friends.

Sue added: “Apollo is looking for patient owners who want to give a loving home to a sensitive old boy. Once he knows he can trust you he is a fantastic dog to be around and just like many of us as we get older, all he wants out of life is to enjoy quiet days surrounded by people that love him, enjoying his home comforts.

“We know he will thrive in the right home and nothing would make us happier than to wave a fond farewell to this older chap in time for Grandparents Day.”

Apollo is looking for a quiet, adult-only home with owners who are happy to take their time to get to know him by visiting him at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury several times before he heads off to his forever home. Although he is more than happy to enjoy walks with his canine companions he would prefer to be the only dog in the home so he can lap up all the love.
