20mph limit planned in Shrewsbury town centre road changes

Shropshire Council wants to make various road improvements to Bellstone, Mardol, Shoplatch, Smithfield Road and Roushill as part of the £12 million Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package.

The plans, which are out for consultation, involve cutting speed limits, widening and repaving footpaths, installing speed humps at major junctions and either revamping or creating new pedestrian crossings.

Consultation documents state: “These enhancements aim to create a pedestrian friendly town centre environment, deter unnecessary cross-town vehicle movements, improve infrastructure for local residents, and enhance the experience for people visiting Shrewsbury.”

New loading bays are proposed at Bellstone to facilitate deliveries to local residents and businesses.

The new parking arrangements are proposed at Mardol and Claremont Street so as to accommodate the widened footway alignments.

A new blue badge holders parking bay is also proposed on Claremont Street outside the old Baptist Church.

Road humps will be installed on Roushill, Shoplatch, Bellstone and Mardol across the width of the carriageway in order to control the speed of traffic.

A 20mph speed limit will be imposed along the entirety of Barker Street, Bellstone, Bridge Street, Claremont Hill, Claremont Street, Hill’s Lane, Lower Claremont Bank, Mardol, Mardol Quay, Priory Road, Roushill Bank, St Austin’s Friars, St Austin’s Street, Victoria Avenue, Victoria Quay, and Welsh Bridge.

There will be further speed limits on Claremont Bank from its junction with St Austin’s Street, Roushill from its junction with Mardol to its junction with Raven Meadows and Smithfield Road from its junction with Welsh Bridge to its junction with Mardol.

Parking restrictions will be in force throughout the town with increased no waiting areas, loading bays and no loading bays and Blue Badge bays.
