The Khan family applied to turn 41 Wood Street, Shrewsbury, into a takeaway, open between midday and 11pm seven days a week.

But members of Shropshire Council’s Central Planning Committee refused the plans after hearing concerns.

Resident Victoria Pearson, who lives directly opposite the proposed site, said: “I live with my young family and this will have an impact on our lives.

“There is already no room for parking. We struggle down the street and we are the only house with a drive. With people driving to collect takeaways it will be unacceptable. They will end up parking illegally.

“My living room is also only 15 metres from the kitchen, the smell will have a huge impact on our lives.

“Finally, being open until 11pm seven days a week, the noise this will generate will have a relentless, non-stop impact.”

Councillor Alex Phillips, local member, told the committee he supported takeaways and businesses generally, but said it was in the “complete wrong location”.

Alterations

Councillor Kevin Pardy agreed, saying: “It worries me. You won’t find any parking around there. I used to live down there. You won’t find a space. If we approve it we will be encouraging people to illegally park. I can’t be part of approving this.”

Members voted unanimously to refuse the plans.

Jane Raymond, planning case officer, told members: “This application relates to change of use from A1 retail to A5 hot food takeaway restaurant and associated alterations to the building.

“The latest amended plans indicate that the external alterations now include the erection of a traditional brick chimney to conceal the extractor ventilation shaft, a new entrance door in place of one window on the front Ellesmere Road elevation and the removal and blocking up of two windows.

“The proposed opening hours have been amended to 12 midday to 11pm seven-days-a-week.

“The site is an existing retail premises (last used as an off-licence and corner shop) with unrestricted opening hours that is adjacent to a dwelling which is also in the ownership of the applicant.”
