Farmer John Hughes from Pontesbury, has his jab at the bowling centre

More than 380 people were vaccinated at the Shrewsbury Indoor Bowling Centre, which has been transformed to accommodate around 1,000 patients at day.

First recipient of the day at Sundorne was farmer John Hughes, 72, from Pontesbury.

He said: "It's nice to have it done. I have missed seeing friends in the village, so hopefully I'll be able to do that again soon."

Dr Arne Rose, medical director at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals Trust, said: "This is another milestone. It's really great to see lots of people involved. We've had help from the fire service, Shropshire Red Cross and Shropshire Council. On this site there is room for expansion similar to the Telford International Centre."

Dr Rose said a new model may be looked at to increase capacity once everybody in the vulnerable categories have had their jabs. The target is to have them done by February 15.

"A big thank you to everybody that has got on board with this – all the people in Shropshire who are supporting us with this," he added. "Everybody has been really understanding and patient. Sometimes there have been glitches with the IT or queues. We are getting better and slicker with each hub that opens, but it will take time."
