Gwen Burgess, mayor of Shrewsbury, joined the St John's Ambulance volunteer programme and underwent her training yesterday.

The Meole councillor encouraged anyone who might be interested to look into applying.

She said: "I’ve just been accepted to be a St Johns Ambulance volunteer vaccinator. I’m really excited to complete the training so I can help with the vaccination programme. If anyone would like to apply, take a look. It’s not a paid role, it’s totally voluntary - different to the NHS scheme which is paid - but really worth doing.

"It's been really good fun and everyone here is really enthusiastic about it. I didn't think for a minute you would be able to vaccinate without experience but they make it so simple. A lot of the jabs are being administered by St John's Ambulance volunteers."
