Shrewsbury Mayor's 'stay kind' plea after louts tear down Covid-19 signs
Shrewsbury's mayor has pleaded with anti-social louts to "stay kind" after they trashed Covid-19 restriction signs and were rude to council workers.
Councillor Gwen Burgess made the plea after several incidents of bad behaviour in the town centre.
Councillor Burgess, who runs Darwin's Sandwich Evolution. in Shoplatch, said: “Having a shop in town, you become aware of how many people have had to keep on working during the lockdowns just to keep things going - from people working in shops, to council staff who are sweeping the streets and emptying the bins.
“I was recently saddened to hear from some of our town council staff who detailed some of the poor behaviour they have received as they went about their work maintaining our parks and open spaces.
“I appreciate that much of this is down to people being ‘Covided-out’ and irritated by the restrictions we all find ourselves in, but we are all in the same boat. None of it has been fair, but we need to get through it and be supportive of one another.
“So please spare a thought for those who are just doing their jobs, working under difficult circumstances, enforcing national guidelines to keep us all safe - and stay kind.”
Helen Ball, Shrewsbury Town Council clerk, added: “As always it is only a minority, but our staff have faced rudeness from people who disagree with the restrictions, and we felt it was important to get the message out that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.”
