A transport expert has welcomed support from major world organisations to call for a standard 20mph speed limit on residential streets.

The United Nations, the World Health Organisations and all UK public health organisations have called for a default speed limit on residential roads of 20mph.

Shropshire's Professor John Whitelegg said that scientists and public opinion both back adopting the reduced speed limit on all streets in Shropshire where pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles can mix.

Shropshire Council rejected the wide-area 20mph speed limit policy at full council in December 2019.

Professor Whitelegg said: “The United Nations road safety week calls for the adoption of wide-area 20mph. The science backs this up. It is the will of the people.

"It is shameful that this simple measure with its impact on protecting children, improving public health, encouraging safer streets for more walking and cycling should be dismissed by councillors who have not inspected the evidence. It must now happen in Shropshire."
