A vigil was held for Palestinians in Pride Hill, Shrewsbury

Shropshire Friends of Palestine gathered at the top of Pride Hill to show their support. The vigil was one of many held around the country acknowledging the 73rd anniversary of what Palestinians call the Nakba (or Catastrophe) and calling for peace, freedom and justice for the Palestinians.

"We planned this vigil before the terrible events in Israel and Gaza of the past week," said Sylvia Ruxton, chair of the group. "It feels all the more important to commemorate peacefully those who suffered at this dark time in Palestinian history that has sadly not ended as the Occupation of the Palestinian Territories continues.

"We were delighted at the turn out over two hours on such a wet day. And by all the people who came to express support. I would also like to thank the Shrewsbury Town Centre police and community officers for their help and support during this peaceful event."
