Don't search for missing people unless fit and ready, urge volunteers
The region's search and rescue volunteers are urging the public not to search for missing people unless fit and ready to do so.
West Mercia Search & Rescue said it was aware of an increase in the number of searches for missing persons taking place across Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
The group is encouraging people not to conduct searches unless they are fully prepared and the appropriate precautions have been taken.
A spokesman from the organisation said: "We are aware that a lot of people are going out to look for missing people at the moment.
"A few years ago we put together some important information with the police for anyone thinking of going out looking.
"Physical searching can be a dangerous activity for untrained persons.
"The urge to find someone and make a difference can lead to increased risk-taking, so this advice is aimed at anyone taking part in a public search to help reduce that risk.
"We recommend that searching of any off-road terrain is left to professional teams."
Advice issued by the life-saving organisation included keeping away from water courses, cliff edges and steep banks; keeping a record of the people involved and locations covered; ensuring children and vulnerable people are not involved in any searches; respecting landowners and staying in small groups.
