Plans to turn the first floor of the wartime hangar into flats have been withdrawn

An application had been lodged to turn the first floor of the historically significant old hangar on Monkmoor Trading Estate into eight apartments. The ground floor is currently occupied by businesses United Carpets and JK Autoworks.

But several objections were submitted, including one from Kenneth Bannerman, director general of the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust, and now the plans, submitted by MAR Design Ltd of Church Stretton, have been withdrawn.

In his objection, heritage expert Mr Bannerman said: "Shrewsbury Airfield (also known as Monkmoor) is a distinguished historical and national asset: what remains of this airfield continues to perform a tremendously valuable service in numerous respects to this very day, and therefore the proposed plan to radically alter the General Service or Belfast hangar of World War One vintage should very much be discouraged.
