Marion Micklewright has been awarded the BEM for services to feline welfare after dedicating 30 years of her life to Shropshire Cat Rescue as the charity's co-founder and manager.

"I did not really think of getting a BEM for doing what I do with Shropshire Cat Rescue when you see what other people receive them for," said Marion.

"It is really odd but really nice. I would not have got this without all the supporters and volunteers over the years and my husband Richard who is my rock. He has supported me to do my life's work as the sensible one. He deserves it as much as me."

Shropshire Cat Rescue, based at Lyth Hill Road, in Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, has grown from housing six to 120 cats, while the 130 volunteers who help the charity now compares to the original six.

Marion said: "I am the one who has been doing it for the longest and I have had to give up an awful lot of things to do this but I would not have got this without others supporting me. I have always been interested in animal welfare and this is a good way to do it.

"I am well chuffed and flattered and I see it as a legacy," she said.
