Jenny Newman said their cat Kaspa was attacked on Tuesday afternoon while she was at home at the Rhea Hall Estate in Highley.

She said: “The dog escaped its owner, ran into my front garden and attacked my cat.

“It was disturbed by a neighbour, my cat ran away but the dog ran into my house before running away down the road.

“I found my cat in someone's garden half hour later covered in puncture wounds and unable to stand well.”

She said she took the one-year-old cat straight to the vets.

“He had internal injuries, puncture wounds and was paralysed. He was put to sleep at 8pm in my arms with my children,” she said. “People need to take responsibility for their dogs, it could have been my son. Our family is destroyed.”

She added that the incident had been reported to the police who are investigating.

Her partner, Tom Scruton had set up a Gofundme to help them pay the vet bills.

He said: “The vet bill wiped all of the money we have, leaving us with nothing for Christmas.

“If we do recover the money back, we will happily donate anything raised to our local community or towards someone else's vets bills.”
