The tiles have been worn and the roof the roof is now leaking at St Michael and All Angels Church, in Lydbury North, and now the church wardens have kick-started a campaign to raise the funds needed so the church will be safe for generations to come.

Lucinda Parish, one the the church's wardens, said that it is lovely to see the community - including non church-goers - helping to raise the funds needed.

She said: "We had to update our five-yearly report and the church architect came to do a further inspection and he basically said we needed to do the roof within two years.

"We've got a bit of time but we launched the fundraiser earlier this year and started it off with bingo, then a quiz and most recently a big breakfast.

"It's so nice that other people have decided to help who don't regularly go to church.

"The weather has caused the tiles to flip and crack and break in places, it's got to the point where the roof is leaking now."

An open gardens event will be held on June 16 and 17 and 20 gardens will be open to visitors along with a scarecrow trail.

There will be teas in the village hall.

Mrs Parish added: "We've already restored the old school room with the help of the youth group as the children have raised some money and we had some funds from two local charities.

"It cost about £1,500 in total."

There will be a pocket opera event on October 27 At Walcott Hall to raise funds. For more information call Mrs Parish on 01588 680413.
