Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard delighted over ban on animals in circuses

A ban on animals performing in circuses has been welcomed by Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard, who has been campaigning on the issue for years.

Mr Pritchard said that the ban, which will start by 2020, was "long overdue".

There are currently four zebra, a zebu cattle, a macaw, three camels, a fox, three raccoons, and six reindeer being used in circuses.

But under the new ban, which was announced yesterday, they will be allowed to be retired and no new animals will be brought in to replace them.

Mr Pritchard said: "I am delighted the Government have finally announced introducing this long overdue ban.

"It has taken a lot of time and effort, but the outcome will now be improved animal welfare and retirement for many exploited sentient animals."

RSPCA spokesman David Bowles said: “This announcement gives circuses a clear two-year warning that no more licences will be issued and after that there will be a ban on wild animals in circuses.

“The complex needs of wild animals can never be adequately met in a circus environment and regular transport, cramped and bare temporary housing, forced training and performance are all unavoidable realities for the animals.

“The RSPCA is keen to work with the circus industry to make arrangements for the best possible retirements for the wild animals.”
